Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Meutya Hafid inaugurated the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Centre at Brawijaya University in Malang, East Java, calling for technology to play a pivotal role in Indonesia’s mission to achieve food self-sufficiency with AI.
With the country’s food security becoming an urgent issue, the minister highlighted the potential of AI to drive solutions for the agricultural sector and beyond, ensuring that Indonesia meets its food production goals while embracing digital transformation.
During her address at the inauguration, Minister Hafid urged the AI Centre to focus on developing AI-powered applications that could be leveraged to improve food security and streamline various sectors, including agriculture, livestock management, and logistics. She noted that the cutting-edge technology at the centre could help Indonesia’s farmers—both in crop and livestock production – by providing data-driven insights and improving productivity.
“We will support this facility to deliver tangible outputs that contribute to food security, such as AI applications that improve the efficiency and sustainability of agricultural practices,” said Minister Hafid.
She emphasised that AI tools could help address challenges such as increasing crop yields, optimising resource usage, and enhancing supply chains, all of which are crucial for the country’s long-term food self-sufficiency objectives.
The AI Centre, located at the Rectorate Building of Brawijaya University, is equipped with the necessary tools and infrastructure to facilitate the use of AI across multiple sectors, including health, manufacturing, and logistics. This diverse range of applications makes it a vital resource for the nation’s push toward digital transformation.
However, it is the agricultural sector that stands to benefit most, with AI enabling Indonesian farmers to access precision farming techniques and better understand climate patterns, soil conditions, and crop performance.
Minister Hafid further stressed the need for Indonesia to invest in nurturing digital talent, which is essential for the country’s future growth. With an estimated shortage of nine million digital professionals by 2030, she underscored the urgency of building a strong digital workforce capable of driving innovation in various fields, including agriculture.
“We are committed to supporting this centre as part of our larger strategy to cultivate a pool of skilled digital workers who can contribute to Indonesia’s progress,” she said.
In addition to its role in fostering innovation and research, the AI Centre at Brawijaya University will also focus on talent development. The centre is designed to offer training programmes and certifications in key areas of AI, including machine learning, deep learning, and natural language processing. These programmes are aimed at students, faculty members, and professionals, allowing them to deepen their knowledge and gain hands-on experience with the latest AI technologies.
The centre also serves as a hub for collaboration, providing consultation services for companies and institutions looking to implement AI-driven solutions in their operations. This approach aligns with the government’s broader vision of integrating AI into the workforce and various industries to improve efficiency, foster innovation, and support sustainable development goals, particularly in the areas of food security and agricultural resilience.
