The gaming and media industries today look significantly different from a decade ago, let alone at the start of the 21st century. These industries owe much of their success to technological advancements, which have been the driving force behind their evolution.
From how we consume media to how we play games, technology remains the focal point of it all. Let’s explore how technology continues to shape these mega industries before our eyes.
VR also plays a major role in the transformation of video gaming as it transports players to a new dimension. For years, major game developers have been working on integrating Augmented Reality (AR) with gaming and these R&D efforts are beginning to pay off. It was recently reported that tech giant and GPU pioneer, Nvidia, has applied for a patent for AR glasses that would feature digital holography. If approved, handheld games like the Nintendo Switch 2 model would be able to improve visual quality from the current 1080p to 4K, allowing for smaller overall game sizes. That is not even diving into the other things NVIDIA have planned, including the new GPU lineup teased at CES 2025.
There is also cloud gaming that has significantly lowered the barrier of entry for gamers. Gamers no longer need to spend a fortune to get the latest console games to play games like Roblox and Fortnite. These cloud games are, as the name implies, cloud-based which allows for easy accessibility. As for developers, they can easily fix any bugs and upgrade the game software without the player even realizing it. 
One noticeable shift in digital behaviour today is the way we consume media. Previously, TV and radio were the top sources of media. Today, streaming services dominate due to their ability to be personalized. Take Netflix, for example—you can create a list of shows to watch, pause your current shows, and receive recommendations based on your viewing habits. This level of personalization has made streaming services a booming sector.
For content creators, AI-integrated editing tools have significantly simplified the content creation process. Many of these tools offer preset templates, allowing creators to produce content faster than ever before. This has also helped reduce costs, as creators no longer need to hire professionals for such services.
The intersection of media and gaming is evident on platforms like YouTube and Twitch. Gamers, in particular, often live-stream their gameplay for viewers. This strategy not only appeals to the younger generation but also attracts millions of viewers, creating opportunities for monetization. YouTube pays content creators based on the number of views, while Twitch users can offer subscription services. According to Pressfarm, as of December 2024, the highest-paid Twitch streamer, Ninja, earns an average of $500,000 monthly (about £402,000), while the highest-paid YouTuber, Mr. Beast, has an estimated net worth of $500 million (about £402 million).
Modern technology has brought traditional casinos into the 21st century through innovations like 5G, artificial intelligence (AI), and virtual reality (VR). The advent of 5G has made live streaming so seamless that it is now standard for major gambling tournaments. For example, the recently concluded WPT World Championship at Wynn Las Vegas was live-streamed, attracting millions of viewers from around the world. And this is just for physical casinos.
For online casinos, digital gaming rooms mean there is no limit to the number of players they can have. This feature has given birth to some of the most popular poker tournaments online where players compete in real-time and win cash prizes. VR also takes player gameplay to a whole new level as it provides a consistent immersive experience with every game.
These platforms have not only improved the way we interact with content but have also created a whole new industry called live commerce, allowing anyone from anywhere to connect with millions of viewers from around the world, and make money while at it. 
To wrap up, as technology continues to evolve, we can expect to see significant growth in modern gaming and media. From game development to gameplay, from content creation to content consumption, one thing is for sure—none of it will remain the same in the coming years. There is also room for financial technology such as blockchain to make a difference as many industries already use it to process payments across borders.
