Those who saw Gukesh Dommaraju’s final match at the World Chess Championship might have also noticed that he was using a chair different from his opponent. He was using the Razer Iskur V2 gaming chair which looked a bit out of place on the tournament floor but made all sense to the chess prodigy from India. When I got a call to review one of these chairs, I wanted to see why the Razer Iskur V2, which is no misfit in the homes of gamers across the world, would make sense to a chess player or to a writer.
The Razer Iskur V2 came to me in a knocked-down state and setting up the chair is the most interesting DIY project I have undertaken recently. Since it was a gaming rig, my teenage son thought it was well within his rights to come out of his den to help me. It is a slightly complicated process given how many parts the chair has, but Razer had simplified everything with large manuals and instructions which reminded me of Lego sets. About 20 to 30 minutes after opening the box, we were staring at the imposing structure of the Iskur V2.
While from a design perspective, it does resemble a regular gaming chair, the sturdiness of the seat, the levers giving multiple options, and the sheer quality of the material used make this different from any other chair you can buy. The chair is available in two colours and materials. The review unit came in a black leather finish.
The base is clearly the core of this chair and it is the first thing you set up. The seat locks on top of it once you have put all the parts in place. The sturdiness of this base means the chair can almost recline flat if you pull the lever on the right side. I would love to have this at work, letting me stretch my back to get a Power Nap between the hectic meeting schedule.
But what I liked about the chair, amidst all its features, was its superb lumbar support. For one, this is not a chair you will slump in and it can support you to achieve the perfect upright posture while you are intently working or playing on the computer. Then you can switch the chair into more relaxing backrest modes, but still offering the perfect lumbar support. There is a dial on the right side of the seat that lets adjust the support for the back to exactly what you need. And as you move around on the seat trying to get into the perfect position for your kill, this portion of the seat swivels with you, all the while offering the support we are now used to.
Now, with the lumbar support, one aspect we often forget is where our arms are resting. Over the years, working long hours on the computer has given me serious attacks of carpal tunnel syndrome. With the Iskur V2, you can move the armrests towards the PC and help your hands come directly above the keyboard in a more ergonomic position, which will be a great plus point for everyone, not just gamers.
The backrest of the chair is way taller than most of us, and this means there is good support for every part of your body. There is an extra headrest that adds some style and comfort too with its velvety finish. Also, the sides of the backrest, with its high-density PU molded foam, have a shape that sort of cups your torso in a comforting way. I also loved the ventilated texture of the chair which means you won’t sweat even if working on the chair for long hours in the Indian summer.
One small issue when you are adjusting the backrest is that it moves with a bit of a jerk and you need to be mindful of this. I would have loved a smoother flow and the ability to lock the backrest at any angle in this range.
Working on my early morning writing on the Razer Iskur V2 made me question a lot of life choices. Even though I have a proper desk at home these days, I still do a lot of work on the sofa, the laptop perched on its armrest. I know it does no good to my body, but you are seeking the comfort of the couch and the support it offers your body’s urge to slump. The Iskur V2 caters to this urge differently, by supporting all parts of your body that are looking for support, whatever you might be doing on the chair. This is a chair that is moving with you like an exoskeleton, and that is exactly what a lot of us want.
With a price tag of around Rs 45,000, the Razer Iskur V2 gaming chair is perfect for serious gamers. But I suggest this makes for a great office chair too, especially for those who spend long hours doing stressful things on the computer. Your body will thank this investment.
