Developers are now asking the Iowa Racing And Gaming Commission to deny a petition that seeks to block Cedar Rapids' casino plans.
The petition from Riverside Casino and and Washington County Riverboat Foundation, filed in November, challenges Linn County's bid for a gaming license. That petition claims the verbiage on the 2021 ballot measure to approve gaming in Linn County was worded incorrectly, since it said to "continue" gaming, when there was no gaming in the first place.
Cedar Crossing developers filed a brief on Wednesday, asking the gaming commission to intervene against that petition, arguing Riverside doesn't have any grounds to challenge the will of Linn County voters.
Riverside and the Washington County Riverboat Foundation now have until Thursday, Jan. 16, to file a response. Oral arguments are set for Thursday, Jan. 23, at the IRGC meeting at Wild Rose Casino and Resort in Jefferson, Iowa. The IRGC is expected to take a verbal vote then and issue a written decision on the petition no later than Monday, Jan. 27.
The commission is expected to make its final decision on Linn County's actual bid for a gaming license on February 6th.
However, those plans could be quashed if lawmakers end up acting quickly on a plan to impose a new casino moratorium. GOP House Rep. Bobby Kaufmann told Iowa's News Now on Thursday he's expecting the bill to look very similar to the one passed out of the House last year, which failed to make it out of the Senate.
And Iowa's News Now wants to hear from you about lawmakers' plans. Are you in favor of a casino moratorium? Participate in our poll below:
