Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation fund UVA teaching technology – 29 News

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – Where tech meets teaching, an AI project years in the works just got a major boost thanks to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
University of Virginia School of Education and School of Engineering are working together to create an AI tool for teacher feedback.
A $1.4 million grant will allow them to bring this tool to the classrooms. With this AI, teachers can upload videos of their lectures for feedback.
Professor Peter Youngs originally thought of the idea years ago, and has been a part of the years-long research behind it, including studying teachers from multiple states and Albemarle County.
Youngs said this tool will be a massive help in alleviating teacher-burnout.
“What we’re trying to do here is look for ways that are pretty straightforward or not very time consuming and that are sort of tied to one’s own teaching one’s own classroom one’s own context to give them ways to reflect, analyze on their teaching, possibly make changes without sort of a big time commitment,” Youngs said.
Youngs said thanks to this grant, they are on track to launch in September.
